Elevating Selkirk College's Ear Training Textbooks

Hear It Sing It Write It is a college level music ear training program. Music educator, Paul Landsberg’s goal was to create a four level program covering ear training fundamentals from a contemporary music angle.

Paul came to Tery with handwritten notation. The mission? Digitize the handwritten material into books that were accurate, easy to read and ready for print.

PROJECT SCOPE

  • Music Engraving
  • Printing QA
  • Brand Refresh

Professional Music Engraving

Contemporary music textbooks are often very thick and use handwritten examples. This may be to follow in the tradition of jazz, but for learning purposes, improving clarity is the most important aspect in order to get the information across. Every lesson and assignment was recreated using Sibelius with a focus on consistent layout and design, thus improving readability.

With a background in classical and contemporary music, Tery was not only able to convert the handwritten notation into a digital format, but also proofread and correct technical and musical errors.

Printing Process QA

Tery applied his past experience in professional printing pre-flighting to ensure the books were ready for printing and binding, preventing any potential issues that could arise in the process. He provided additional quality assurance by inspecting the final product for defects and quality print standards.

Branding Refresh

The first semester of Hear It Sing It Write It had been created years before and was due for a visual update. The brand refresh included everything from book and CD cover design to color palette, logo design and typography choice.
